Watch: Paying your drivers: a pay period

Where pay comes from, how a week becomes statements, and how to review, adjust, approve and record the payment.

On this page

These pay components and settings are part of a driver pay plan (Set up driver pay plans).

Pay per stop, package or route

  • Per stop pays each completed stop of a route; stops at one address count once. Unpaid stops per route pays only the stops over a number ("$0.50 per stop over 140"). Off a route, a plain order is one stop and a multi-stop job pays its final drop and each extra pickup or drop done.
  • Per package pays each package delivered, after Free packages per stop ("$0.30 per extra package" = 1 free). Off a route, the free packages apply once per job.
  • Per route pays a flat amount when the route completes ("$190 per route").
  • If a route's order is undone or another driver re-delivers it, its stop pay is reversed (a closed period corrects in the next one) and goes to the delivering driver. Flat route pay and distance stay.
  • Per distance with Route distance pays the route's distance once (depot, every stop, back to the depot), not each order's own distance.

Route pay is booked when the route is completed. An order delivered off a route counts as one stop.

Percent of the price

Percent of order can take Chosen parts of the price: base rate, fuel surcharge, insurance, waiting time, other options, tolls, charges after delivery. Set a Minimum and Maximum per order. For "62 % of everything but fuel and insurance, plus 100 % of fuel", add the component twice.

A charge added or voided after the delivery (with Add charge on the order, until it is invoiced) re-books the driver's pay for that order: the old lines are reversed and the new amount is booked, both in the open pay period. Tips are never part of the percentage; they are paid in full on their own line.

Drivers without a plan are paid from the rates on their profile, including Commission (%) of the order subtotal. Leave the hourly rate empty for a contractor who isn't paid by the hour.

When an order isn't delivered

  • Failed attempt pays per failed pickup or delivery attempt.
  • Return leg pays the drive back when the parcel is returned to the sender.
  • Late cancellation pays when the order is cancelled once the driver reached a stage you pick (for example At pickup), optionally only less than some minutes before the pickup.

Each is a flat amount, a percent of the delivery pay or the order price, or a rate per distance, package or weight. If a cancellation or return is undone, its pay comes off the next statement. The Simulator lists what these pay for the sample order.

Only when…

Under a component or modifier, Only when… limits it like a price modifier: days, a time window, dates, pickup or delivery zone, vehicle class, customers, payment method (for example cash on delivery), priority, rush or signature required. Times and days are those of the delivery, route end or failure, in your company's time zone. Route pay can only depend on the day, time, dates and vehicle class.

Pickup and delivery by different drivers

Turn on Pickup and delivery by different drivers and set the Pickup driver's share (%). When one driver picks up and another delivers (a hub hand-off or a transfer), the pickup driver gets that share of the order's pay and the delivering driver the rest.

Tips

A tip is added on the order: on the order page (Driver tip, Add tip), by the customer in the portal (Tip the driver) or through the API. It is billed with the order as its own line, with no tax on it, until the order is invoiced. The delivering driver gets all of it on every plan; a tip added after the delivery is paid too. An order that is cancelled or returned bills and pays no tip.
